You don't have to be able to ride a bike at Center Parcs but it helps. Fortunately for me and my sister, our mum couldn't. Again and again she tried - prompted by the lack of cars - but to no avail.
I was ten and my sister eight and we were able to take off on our bikes entirely under our own steam: we had a taste of freedom that the busy roads at home had denied us.
We felt quite the daredevils - even being allowed to go to the supermarket on our own was beyond our wildest dreams. Cycling at night in the warmth of summer is something I'll never forget.

The new lodges have been completely redesigned. They now have rainfall showers, saunas and outdoor barbecues. Beds and pillows are plump and comfortable. Each room has its own bathroom and flatscreen TV and with a pool table and Play station in the games room, it was going to be hard for us to leave. My sister and I couldn't even have imagined excitement like this all those years ago.
