11 exciting facts about the new Sports Café menu

1 Craft beers have the best names

Exhibits A through D: Brewdog Elvis Juice, By the Horns Stiff Upper Lip Pale, Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA, Curious Brew. They’re all intriguing and they’re all on our new drinks menu.

2 Brunch has never been bigger

Whether you choose the avocado toast (tip: call it ‘avo toast’ for maximum hipster points), the ham hock hash or the yoghurt-granola parfait, the real question is: can you still have lunch afterwards as well? (Answer: yes)

3 ATTENTION: there’s a chips-and-crisps-cheese-melt

There’s also a trendy Mac ‘n’ Cheese Melt and a refined Avocado, Halloumi and Harissa Pesto Melt. But we are all about the Chips and Salt and Vinegar Crisps Melt.

4 Perfect for #Veganuary

Whether you’re vegan at New Year or all year, there’s plenty to choose from. Mushroom, Tomato and Falafel Sandwich with Houmous; Avocado and Tomato on Toast; Handing Vegetable Skewer with Roast Potatoes…

5 Something for the little ones

We’re evolved our children’s food to offer everything for the fussiest eaters to the littlest gourmets. There’s vegetable lasagne, crunchy crudités, salmon fish fingers and the classic jelly and ice cream (actually, can we order that one?)

6 It’s Tea-off Time

We’ve brought in the big guns for our tea menu: after training from Twinings and The London School of Tea, we’re offering a range of exotic, artisanal teas. The Nutty Chocolate Assam tastes like your favourite chocolate spread in a cup.

7 Go (Middle) East

The new Middle Eastern flatbreads are stone-baked and topped with grilled spring onion, shredded fennel and carrot, pomegranate seeds, houmous and rocket with a creamy garlic sauce. And they come in three flavours: Rotisserie Chicken, Middle Eastern Pulled Lamb and Grilled Halloumi with Mediterranean Vegetables.

8 Share more, eat more

With our new small plates section, you can order a selection of tasty treats, tapas-style, to share. Or not, it’s up to you. Choose from: Boneless Chicken Thighs; Crispy Spiced Chicken Wings; Sticky Pork Ribs; Pumpkin, Goat’s Cheese and Kale Croquettes; Crispy Nacho Bites, and Crispy Calamari.

9 Where’s the wheat?

Our gluten-free offering is super important to us, so instead of just dodging bread products, we’ve sourced the very best substitutes for sandwiches, soups, toast, burger buns, cake and even beer-batter!

10 Two spoons, please!

The new Ultimate Chocolate Sundae to Share is the romantic dessert of your dreams. Layers of chocolate and caramel ice cream, marshmallows, crushed Flake and Maltesers, topped with whipped cream and finished with chocolate and toffee sauce.

11 Got milk? (No.)

For dairy- lactose-free guests, there’s plenty to choose from, including cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, steaks, rotisserie chicken and delicious chargrilled skewers.

The only make-ahead breakfast recipe you need this year

Here’s our wish list for breakfast recipes:

  • Easy to make ahead
  • Portable – for when you snooze past your alarm and need to eat on the go
  • Healthy (but still the delicious kind)
  • Colourful
  • Gluten-free/dairy-free options

This one ticks all the boxes. Make the below elements ahead and each morning you can pack a jar with your choice of fruit, flavour and crunch.

Overnight oats (3-4 servings)

Ingredients:
100g rolled oats (buy gluten-free oats if necessary)
150ml yoghurt (your choice of flavour)
300ml of milk

Method:
1 Mix all the ingredients together and chill in the fridge overnight. You can add a splash more milk in the morning if it’s too thick for you.

Chia coconut pudding (3-4 servings)

This gluten- and dairy-free option is a great alternative to overnight oats

Ingredients:
400ml coconut milk
75g chia seeds
2 tbsp honey

Method:
1 Stir the coconut milk until smooth
2 Add the chia seeds and honey and stir to combine
3 Chill in the fridge overnight. You can add a splash of water or more coconut milk in the morning if it’s too thick for you.

Oaty maple granola (3-4 servings)

Ingredients:
200g rolled oats (buy gluten-free oats if necessary)
3 tbsp pumpkin seeds
3 tbsp flaked almonds
3 tbsp roughly chopped hazelnuts
80g melted butter
4 tbsp maple syrup

Method:
1 Mix everything in a large bowl until fully combined
2 Spread your mixture out onto a baking sheet and bake at 145C for 30 minutes, turning every 10 minutes, until golden (it keeps crisping up as it cools and dries)
3 This will keep if stored in an airtight jar – it’s great sprinkled over yoghurt!

Fruity layers (3-4 servings)

Ingredients (your choice of…):
Blueberries
Raspberries
Blackberries
Chopped mango
Kiwi

Method:
1 Dice your fruit into small pieces or mash your berries into a soft puree.

Assembling your breakfast pots

Now you’ve made all your elements, layer up your breakfast pots with crushed/diced fruit at the base, then alternating fruit with either your overnight oats or chia seeds. Top with your crunchy granola and go!

Sports Café new menu: the tea story

We have another teaser on the Sports Café new menu and it’s just as exciting as the last. A new addition to the delicious menu is a range of warming, holistic artisanal teas. To find our all about the new addition, we asked James Haywood what to expect from the new range.

We’re super excited about the artisanal tea menu, can you tell us which flavours you’ve chosen?

The tea menu includes a premium range of teas from Twinings, which are served in these amazing, delicate faux-silk bags. There’s a range of great flavours, so I’d say a few to look out for are the Superfruity, Apple and Elderflower Green Tea and Passion Fruit Ceylon.

They sound amazing, but why tea, and why Sports Café?

In the past, we haven’t taken tea seriously. But with more people drinking herbal teas because of the health benefits, I thought it was time to review our selection. I decided that the tea menu deserved the same quality feel as the rest of the menu.

Which is your favourite?

It honestly depends on the time of day. In the morning I would choose The Mighty Assam to get going, but during the day it would be the Superfruity.

I hear you spent time with Twinings and even The London School of Tea?

Yes, I went to visit the Twinings head office and met with Lucy Chappell who is the head of The London School of Tea. It was a fascinating visit with an amazing tea tasting session where I got to learn about the tea we’re going to be serving.

Did they teach you the secret to the perfect cup of tea?

They did, and I found that it’s a very particular process! They said the perfect length of time to infuse tea is between three and four minutes, depending on personal taste.

Have the Sports Café teams been specially tea-trained?

Yes, it’s really important to us that all our teams are behind the new menu. So they’ve all had training from Lucy, where they were introduced to the flavour profiles of the tea, the caffeine content, how to serve and the infusion times.

Overall I am so pleased with everything on the new Sports Café menu as we’re once again raising the bar with our biggest menu change we’ve ever done at Center Parcs. Touch wood, it’s going to work and guests will love it.

The wait for the launch of the new Sports Café menu is nearly over, in the meantime, if you missed our reveal of the new craft beer selection, check it out here.

In De Kempervennen zwemmen otters.

Getest: High Adventure Experience

Children are ‘working’ longer hours than their parents as RDA for Free Time is developed for children

  • Primary school children are ‘working’ for up to 46 hours a week, 9 hours more than the adult average
  • Parents say that on average, their children currently get just one hour and 29 minutes of unstructured, ‘free’ time a day
  • New Free Time Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), developed by Dr Sam Wass for Center Parcs, calls for an average of 3 hours 51 minutes a day
  • The ‘Cult of Busy’ has now infiltrated to our children, as primary school aged children are ‘working’ – either in school or scheduled activities - for up to 46 hours a week, nine hours more than the UK adult average of 37 hours1.

According to a new report2 issued today by child psychologist Dr Sam Wass and Center Parcs, well-meaning parents are over-timetabling their children as they estimate that their children have an average of just one hour and 29 minutes free on a week day.

As a result, a Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for Free Time of three hours and 51 minutes, has been developed by child psychology expert Dr Sam Wass, from Channel 4’s ‘Secret Life of 4 and 5 Year -Olds’, commissioned by Center Parcs.

The RDA, which was inspired by the government guidelines we use for fruit and vegetables, is based on three hours on a week day and six hours a day at the weekend, calculated using time needed for a variety of free-time activities which will allow children to use their imagination.

According to this new figure, children currently have a free-time deficit of two hours and 22 minutes per day, which is created when they begin primary school and their days are filled with extra-curricular activities and scheduled events.

So much so, 44% of the children interviewed believe that they do more in a day than their parents.

Dr Sam Wass said:

“Many parents are desperate to do the right thing for their children - we shuttle them back and forth from school, to football, to an after-school club, and then get them home and sit and ensure they do their homework.

“But in fact, research suggests that it’s much more beneficial for children if their time is not always so structured. It’s the down-time, when there is not such much going on and the child has to entertain themselves, when they do their best learning. There is a huge amount of research that suggests that this child-led, unstructured free play is vital for stimulating imagination and creativity, as well as helping the child to become more self-sufficient.”

Children’s Schedules

On an average day, children wake at 6.55am and go to bed at 8.01 pm and are currently spending 35 minutes in clubs, 32 minutes on homework and rehearsing, 50 minutes reading and 14 minutes helping with housework, in addition to the normal school day.

On top of this is time spent on eating, bathing and travelling for school and activities.

Parents reasons for signing their children up for clubs are clear, with 60% saying that they would feel they had failed their child if they didn’t give them the opportunity to try a club they’re interested in. Additionally, they want to give them the chance to excel at what they like (54%), to help with their socialisation (53%) and to further their learning (44%), showing that parents are simply aiming to help their children as much as possible.

However, there is a danger of children burning out, as one in five (19%) have asked their parents not to go to a class because they are too tired to attend.

Creating a Balance

The current state of affairs suggest that of the free time children do have available, their time is currently skewed heavily towards one of the activities: screen time.

Television, playing on tablets, phones or computers and other digital distractions accounts for 6 hours and 49 minutes a week – or 65% of the free time available to them.

When given the choice of what to do when bored, 67% of children interviewed said they would watch TV over anything else. However, when asked what they actually enjoy doing the most, playing outside comes out on top.

The RDA for Free Time

Recommending three hours 51 minutes a day, the RDA provides enough time for children to participate in a range of free-time activities which will allow them time to play, use their imagination an develop their thinking.

This includes a variety of the below suggestions:

  • Physical play outdoors
  • Imaginative play (away from screens)
  • Being read a story
  • Screen time
  • Spending shared parent-child time on a child-led, fun activity

Dr Sam Wass continued:

“The figures might initially look high, causing you to think ‘this is too much to ask!’ but this recommended daily allowance is designed as a goal for parents and children to work to. We want to encourage parents to use this as an opportunity to assess their child’s scheduled time and supplement some of the extra-curricular clubs for some of these suggestions. It’s understandable that some days are busier than others and it just might not be possible to hit a perfect balance every day, but the key is for parents to try to encourage their children to do a variety of the free time suggestions, whenever they can free up time.

“Research suggests that children’s free playtime has dropped by an estimated 25% over the past twenty years[1]. The RDA for Free Time is similar to that for fruit and vegetables: it’s best if you don’t reach your target by eating 5 apples - variety is ideal. The same is true for free time -mixing up the types of activity is key for development. You also can’t just do all of the hours over the weekend – the key is to spread the activity out over the week and have a good amount of quality free time each day.”

Colin Whaley, Marketing Director from Center Parcs said “This report shows that parents are really going above and beyond to do what they think is best for their child. As a parent myself, I was initially taken aback by the suggested recommended daily allowance, but it gave me food for thought about whether or not my own children currently achieve it.  Clubs and sport play an important role for their development and life skills but creating a balance with some more simple time out together is clearly very important.

“We commissioned this report to further understand family life and what challenges parents and children are facing and overcoming, so we can always ensure we’re offering what they need. What has undoubtedly come out of this is the need for families – parents and children alike – to take time out to relax. We are passionate about creating the best environment for families to experience this, and insights such as these are invaluable for us to create the best short break possible.”

Helping Children Achieve the Free Time RDA

To help families across the UK discover if they are giving themselves enough free time, Center Parcs have created an online ‘Free Time Calculator’ where users can input the amount of time they spend on activities per day and the calculator can show how they stack up against the RDA.

To try the calculator and view top tips on how to help children make the most of their free time, visit blog.centerparcs.co.uk/recommended-daily-free-time/

Dr Sam Wass’ tips to help children make the most of their free time:

Follow your child’s interests
Every child is interested in something. All you need to do is to support them, and provide what they need to help them develop their interests. And it helps if you can get them interested in what you’re interested in. It can be hard to switch off the button in your head saying ‘I’m in charge’ – but it’s really important to engage with your child, but let your child set the agenda.

Don’t be scared to hear ‘I’m bored’
The first thing you’ll hear when you turn off the screens is the cry that they’re bored. But the more children get used to using their imagination to entertain themselves, the easier they will find it.

Screen time can be shared time, too.
Even sitting playing a computer game with a child can be a great bonding experience, and can help the child to learn more from the game. And sitting watching TV together can help to start up conversations, and to encourage them to watch a greater variety of different types of TV.

Help them to help themselves
There’s a saying that goes: ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.’ Well, the same applies to play! Children have to be taught how to play, and to develop their own structured, long-lasting projects that will allows them to entertain themselves without needing other forms of stimulation. You might have to sit with them, and support them for a while, as you teach them how to play productively. But what they learn from this process, in terms of life-long skills is every bit – or possibly more – important than what they learn at school.

Sports Café new menu: craft beers

The new Sports Café menu is nearly up and running and we‘re eager to share some of the exciting features with you. So we asked Group Executive Chef James Haywood all about the new selection of craft beers.

We’re intrigued to find out what new beers you’re bringing to Sports Café?

The craft beers we are introducing to the new menu include a range of world beers from great brands such as BrewDog, Flying Dog, By the Horns and many more. The craft beer menu is an exciting addition as all the beers are of great quality and offer a great extension to the Sports Café drinks menu.

Why is craft beer a perfect fit for Sports Café?

We started selling craft beers in Sports Café a couple of years ago and they did so well and were so popular with guests that we moved them into Huck’s and The Pancake House. We introduced craft beers from areas of America into Huck’s to match the brand, and in The Pancake House we decided on a selection of world beers. Guests really loved these so we decided to include some in the new Sports Café menu.

How did you choose which ones to include?

By tasting them! We started with around 30 types of craft beers and began by tasting them all so we could decide which would work on the new menu. We did this in rounds until we ended up with the few we have now. The end result is a great selection of craft beers in bottles and tins.

So if you’ve tasted them all, which is your favourite?

That’s tough because they all taste so good! I think my favourite would to be the BrewDog Elvis Juice which is brewed with grapefruit peel. It’s a strong craft beer of 6.5% but the acidity from the grapefruit peel gives it a great freshness.

Excited? We are! We’re counting down the days till we can head to Sports Café for a taste of the new menu which will be available at all Villages from 27 January 2017.

Want more? If you haven’t already, feast your eyes upon on what you can expect from the new breakfast and brunch menu at Sports Café.

Cool Factor is terug op TV! Getest: Tower Jump, Vrije Val

The latest RDA your family might be missing out on

If your children have a busier calendar than you do, you’re not alone.

According to a new report, many of us are well-meaningly filling our children’s days with educational extra-curricular activities – at the expense of free time.

The report, issued by child psychologist Dr Sam Wass (from Channel 4’s ‘Secret Life of 4 and 5 Year-Olds’) and Center Parcs, shows that parents are over-timetabling their children, leading to them ‘working’ up to 46 hours a week – that’s 9 hours more than the average adult!

Crucially, they’re left with an average of just one hour and 29 minutes of unstructured free time on a weekday.

How much free time does your child enjoy?

If your answer came out at any less than 3 hours and 51 minutes a day, you might be missing out…

The same report sets a new Free Time Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), developed by Dr Wass. It calls for children to enjoy an average of 3 hours and 51 minutes a day.

How to hit your RDA

If your child could do with a little more free time in their life, here are Dr Sam Wass’ tips to help children make the most of their free time:

Follow your child’s interests
Every child is interested in something. All you need to do is to support them, and provide what they need to help them develop their interests. And it helps if you can get them interested in what you’re interested in. It can be hard to switch off the button in your head saying ‘I’m in charge’ – but it’s really important to engage with your child, but still let you child set the agenda.

Don’t be scared to hear ‘I’m bored’
The first thing you’ll hear when you turn off the screens is the cry that they’re bored. But the more children get used to using their imagination to entertain themselves, the easier they will find it.

Screen time can be shared time, too
Even sitting playing a computer game with a child can be a great bonding experience, and can help the child to learn more from the game. Watching TV together can help to start up conversations, and to encourage them to watch a greater variety of different types of TV.

Help them to help themselves
There’s a saying that goes: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Well, the same applies to play! Children have to be taught how to play, and to develop their own structured, long-lasting projects that will allow them to entertain themselves without needing other forms of stimulation. You might have to sit with them, and support them for a while, as you teach them how to play productively. But what they learn from this process, in terms of lifelong skills is every bit – or possibly more – important than what they learn at school.

Chasing hygge at Center Parcs

Crackling log fire, soft fabrics, warm drinks and the easy company of loved ones: since early 2016 we’ve been told what hygge is and why we should all be seeking it.

For the uninitiated, hygge originates in Norway but the concept is familiar in most Scandinavian countries. It has no direct translation in English, but it goes something like this – a contented sense of wellbeing, taking joy from small, understated moments of happiness, with an emphasis on cosiness and self-care. It’s an antidote to hectic modern life.

And that got us thinking about hygge at Center Parcs. Our Villages are designed, down to the smallest detail, to allow you to spend quality family time together, to take your break at your own pace, and to relax and unwind.

But how do you hygge at Center Parcs? Here are a few of our ideas…

Stay in

Whichever Lodge you choose, you’ll enjoy a wood-burning fire, cozy sofas and open-plan living. They’re perfect for a quiet evening in – cook something special together (or order Dining In, we don’t judge) and really catch up. For top hygge marks, make a batch of ultimate hot chocolate and enjoy them in your pyjamas in front of that crackling fire.

Get grounded

Hygge might seem synonymous with cosiness, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors. Wrap up in your softest scarf, pull on your wellies and go for a real romp around our hundreds of acres of forest. You can look out for some of our resident wildlife on your own, or book a place on a Ranger’s Walk to learn from an expert. They’ll take you to all the best spots for the best chance to find squirrels, rabbits, badgers, deer, birds and more.

Really unwind

When was the last time you had nothing on your mind? That’s the aim of the game at Aqua Sana, where our carefully curated experience rooms will guide you from stress to serenity. Bring out the hygge by attempting a spot of mindfulness – settle back in a steam room and focus on nothing but relaxing your muscles, the warmth of the air and your own breathing.

Quiet creativity

One of our favourite ways to leave the outside world behind us is to step into the Pottery Painting Studio. Pick your pottery, choose your colours and close your mind to everything except your brush strokes. It’s a powerfully relaxing, almost meditative activity. We love the quiet, idle chatter as you really focus on creating something.

In a world that keeps us racing at a million miles an hour, seeking a moment’s hygge is soothing and restorative. If you and your family could do with some a break from it all in the heart of the forest this year, book a Center Parcs break.

New breakfast and brunch at Sports Café

From sausage sandwiches to avocado toast, here are the new dishes – and the old favourites – gracing the Sports Café breakfast/brunch menu.

The all-new Sports Café menu for 2017 arrives on Friday 27th January, but here at Under the Treetops, we'll be bringing you a smattering of inside scoops between now and then.

Today, we're talking breakfast – the most important meal of the day, and brunch – our favourite meal of the day (not to mention the chicest way to style out a 'second breakfast').

If you're headed straight to the Subtropical Swimming Paradise in the morning, you're probably after something light that won't hold you back as you zip down the Rapids.

How about a fresh fruit platter, a layered yoghurt and granola parfait, or one of our freshly made smoothies? Green Kick is loaded with the good stuff to keep your energy levels tip top until lunch – kale, kiwi, cucumber, spinach and apple.

But then there are the days when only a cooked breakfast will do. And don't fear – we've still got your favourite Full English (and a vegetarian option, of course) as well as all the side orders to really make it your own (the day we don't order an extra hash brown is how you know that's really our evil twin).

Center Parcs boekt beste resultaat in jaren

EAZA Conference

The date for EAZA Conference has been chosen: from the 18th untill the 25th of September 2017 at Center Parcs Parc Sandur.

The EAZA Conference is the biggest annual gathering of the European zoo and aquarium community, bringing more than 600 delegates together for four days of meetings, presentations, discussions and networking opportunities. The event is primarily aimed at EAZA members, with most of EAZA's TAGs and committees holding meetings alongside a variety of special workshops. Plenary sessions bring all delegates together to focus on topics of broad interest to the community.

Sharing knowledge and skills across all levels of zoo and aquarium management leads to better results in conservation, research and education – and lively debate helps us to understand where and how we need to direct our collective efforts. In addition to the annual conferences EAZA also organises, together with the hosting member institutions, bi-annual conferences and symposia that focus on a more specific topic within the field of zoo management and business.
