Hoe werkt de wildwaterbaan? | Center Parcs Uitvogelen

Children’s Hospice Week 2019

During Children’s Hospice Week from 17 June to 23 June 2019, we are supporting our incredible charity partner Together for Short Lives in raising awareness of children’s hospices in the UK.

Together for Short Lives are a charity that helps children with life-limiting conditions and their families get the very best care and support they can to make the most out of every moment together as a family.

‘Moments that matter’ is the theme for this year’s campaign. Hospices can be incredibly happy, bright places that help families to create precious moments together that they will treasure forever

From duck races to bubble runs, we are proud to say that staff from every village across the UK participate in volunteering for their local children’s hospice. Take a look at some of the ways we have supported Together for Short Lives recently…

Head Office and the Contact Centre

A team went to Bluebell Wood to help with their housekeeping for the day, as children’s hospices are always in need of some extra pairs of hands. The hospice is often a home away from home for these children and their families, they were grateful for helping it to become an even warmer and welcoming place!

Sherwood Forest

A team from Sherwood Forest went to Bluebell Wood to transform a previously disused garden area into a beautiful, accessible fairy garden! This is now a peaceful place for children and families to enjoy time together outside.

Whinfell Forest

A team of maintenance volunteers from Whinfell Forest made a visit to Jigsaw Children’s Hospice to help tidy up their workshop and create some new shelving. Tasks like these save hospice workers valuable time, allowing them to focus their efforts on delivering care to children and families.

Elveden Forest

An Elveden Forest team went along to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice’s Retail Office, to help support their charity shops. Shops can be a big part of supporting a children’s hospice, helping them to raise funds consistently throughout the year, and they are always looking for volunteers to support on the shop floor and in their warehouses.

Woburn Forest

Colleagues from Woburn Forest went to Keech Hospice for a day of pottery painting and pampering. Their volunteering day was just before Mother’s Day, so they helped the children with their pottery painting to make some lovely Mother’s Day gifts for some special Mums, as the Mums themselves also got pampered.

Longleat Forest

The Longleat Forest team took the Center Parcs experience to Children’s Hospice South West and filled the day face painting, hair braiding, nail treatments, nature walks and sports day games. Their support helped children, siblings and parents to enjoy a fun-filled day of activities together and make some very precious memories.

Recipe: Muffaletta – An all-in-one picnic sandwich

It makes a fabulous summer lunch, as all the layers mingle together you give you a mixture of flavours and textures in every tasty slice. Perfect if you are heading out for the day, and no need to take a hundred containers and cutlery either. Enjoy creating your own flavour combination stuffed with meats and cheeses, or you can easily make it vegetarian, just pile in the veggies and salad.

A suggested list of ingredients

But use your favourite deli-items or your favourite things to put on a pizza!

  • Olive Tapenade or Pesto
  • Rocket Leaves
  • Capers
  • Sun-blush/sun-soaked tomatoes
  • Emmental cheese
  • Sliced salami or chorizo
  • Roasted peppers from a jar
  • Artichoke hearts from a jar
  • Grated beetroot or carrot, squeezed a little to remove excess juice
  • Olives
  • Crisp fried pancetta slices
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Olive oil

How to make it:

  • Take a large round loaf like a boule or pain polka, or even a focaccia
  • Slice it horizontally and scoop out most of the doughy bread from the loaf and the ‘lid’ (Tip: You can let these dry for a while and turn them into breadcrumbs for cooking with)
  • Spread the base with some tapenade or pesto and then drizzle in some olive oil
  • Now you can get creative, just start layering in ingredients that you love
  • Maybe start with a layer of rocket or other salad leaves
  • Add a handful of salty capers
  • Add some juicy sun-blush tomatoes and drizzle in a little of their herby oil
  • Add a handful of olives and slices of salami
  • Holey cheese like Emmental works well so add a layer of that
  • Antipasti from a jar gives great flavour colour and texture so put in some chargrilled peppers or artichoke hearts
  • Add some freshly grated raw beetroot or carrot if you can for sweetness and colour
  • Remember a few twists of pepper and sprinkle of salt as you stack your ingredients and perhaps another drizzle of olive oil for the dryer layers
  • If you like a bit of crunch in your sandwich add a layer of crispy fried bacon or pancetta
  • Keep alternating the layers until it is stuffed to the top, then add a bit more!
  • Spread the inside of the lid with tapenade or pesto and wrap the whole loaf in a big piece of greaseproof paper or baking parchment
  • Tie it with string and press it down with a plate and a few heavy tins and let it sit in the fridge until you are ready to head out for your picnic or for a super hearty lunch

A perfect Father’s Day in the forest

Breakfast like a king

After a well-deserved lie in, get off to the right start with breakfast at Sports Café. Treat dad to Sports Café Champion’s Breakfast: two sausages, two slices of grilled back bacon, two free range eggs, grilled tomato, mushroom, baked beans, two hash browns, toast and a glass of orange juice…There’s no better way to start the day!

Dive right in

Head to the Subtropical Swimming Paradise and wallow away the time in our wave pool, tackle the Wild Water Rapids, make a splash in the water play areas or relax in our whirlpools. Why not surprise your deserving dad by booking a private family cabana in advance, so he can put his feet up and relax in style on the comfy seats with complimentary soft drinks and your own TV?

A sugar rush

After hours of splashing good fun in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, dad can refuel and refresh at The Pancake House. Delight his sweet tooth with a Banoffee Stack – layered with banana and topped with whipped cream, banana, toffee and chocolate sauce and crushed Flake.

An action-packed afternoon

The whole family could compete at Laser Combat, tackle the Aerial Adventure or watch your little ones behind the wheel of a mini 4×4 in Off-Road Explorers. If you really fancy a bit of family competition then try nine holes of Adventure Golf, navigate the obstacles, avoid the pitfalls and see who can achieve family bragging rights with an almost-impossible hole in one.

Finish with a feast

Transport dad to the Deep South and book a table at Huck’s American Bar and Grill. He can gorge on Californian flavours like our prawn tostadas, smoky New Orleans-style ribs or a steak cooked just like they do in Texas, yum.

Last minute gifts

Don’t worry if you’ve forgotten to pick up a little something for dad to open on the big day – we’ve got you covered. There are great gifts in Time For Shade, The Store Room, Spirit and Sportique. If he’s got a sweet tooth, then head to Treats for some handmade fudge or retro sweets.

Recipe: Watermelon Gin Slush

If you’re spending World Gin Day at Center Parcs, why not treat yourself to a glass of gin at Sports Café or Leisure Bowl? The When in Rome Spa Day at Aqua Sana also includes a delicious gin cocktail and the ParcMarket stocks a great variety of gins.

If you are at home and feeling particularly fancy, why not try this Watermelon Gin Slush? You can make an extra layer of green lime or mint slush to add to the top, but it’s just delicious (and very pretty) without.

Make some in advance and keep in the freezer for watermelon based emergencies. You never know when that might happen…

Ingredients – serves 2

1/2 small watermelon – peeled and cubed (about 750g)
2 Shots of gin – 60ml
2 Shots of lime cordial – 60ml
A splash of soda or lemonade

1 Blend up the cubed watermelon
2 Pour through a sieve
3 Stir in the lime cordial
4 Add the gin (optional)
5 Pour into a baking dish and freeze for 2 hours
6 Put two tall glasses in the freezer to make them frosty
7 Scrape the watermelon ice with a fork and add the pink slush to your frosted glasses
8 Top up with a little soda or lemonade to taste

Green topped slushy
Make a small tray of ice with lime cordial, soda and some green food colouring. You can also add chopped mint leaves. Freeze for 1-2 hours, stirring with a fork occasionally. Scrape into green slush with a fork and add to the top of your watermelon cocktail.

After freezing and shaving the watermelon ice you can keep it in a ziplock bag for when you need it.

Your summer at Center Parcs to-do list

The Center Parcs forests are spectacular all year round, but we can’t deny that some of our activities really shine in the height of summer. There is nothing quite like cruising around the lake while the water sparkles or building and defending your own fortress in the forest in the glorious sunshine.

So here are our top picks for activities to try during your summer break this year – plus a few wet weather ideas in case it all doesn’t go to plan.

Take to the lake

When the sun is out, without a doubt the lake is the place to be. With something for everyone, you can have hours of fun in the sun. If you fancy something adrenaline fuelled, gather your friends and family for AquaParc. An obstacle course on water, jump, slash and climb your way through beams, bubbles and slides to find your way to the end. Available at Longleat Forest now and Sherwood Forest and Elveden Forest from the 19 July 2019.

If you still want a bit of action but prefer watersports with less of a chance of taking a dip, hire a Kayak and take in laps of the lake at your own pace.

Or if action-packed isn’t your style, hire one of our Electric Boats for a more leisurely pace. With all the hard work taken away, sail in comfort and take in the best views of the village.

Action-packed adventures

With up to 400 acres of the forest to explore on your break get involved in our activities within nature. Get competitive with our Forest Fortress Den Build activity, using only natural resources race against the clock to build a fortress while defending your team flag and attacking the oppositions fortress, and see who can raise their flag first to win. Available at Sherwood Forest and Woburn Forest from the 19 July 2019.

Or for something more exhilarating head to our Outdoor Activity Centre. Deep in the forest, with unique activities, why not try Quad Biking or Junior Quads for your little ones. Get to grips with your quad bikes and then test out your new-found skills on our purpose-built track, not available at Woburn Forest.

Save it for a rainy day

When the British weather doesn’t go to plan, it doesn’t mean all the fun has to stop at Center Parcs. Take a trip to the Pottery Painting Studio whatever the weather, choose from a wide range of pottery and let your creativity run wild with the help of our brushes and paints. Once you’re finished, we’ll professionally fire and glaze it for you to take home as a memento.

For something more active at Elveden Forest and Whinfell Forest, try your hand at our new games of squash, but with a twist. For your older ones suitable for all abilities, get competitive with Interactive Squash, with a variety of games available from tic tac to block squash and see who comes out on top.

Or bring your little ones to play a game of Family Ball Wall, with softballs kick or throw the targets on our interactive walls to see can get the personal best.

Got your family summer break booked or still need to get a date booked in the diary? Discover more about your next summer adventure today.

Kids fun | Secrets of Center Parcs (3)
