Grote brand in vakantiehuisje Westerhoven: 'Het was kantje boord'

Een huisje op vakantiepark De Kempervennen van Centerparks in Westerhoven is donderdagnacht door brand beschadigd. De brand werd rond twee uur ontdekt.

In het vakantiehuisje bevonden zich twee jongens. Een van hen was eten aan het opwarmen in een pan op het gasfornuis, toen hij - na een lange werkdag - in slaap viel. De andere jongen sliep op dat moment al.

Heelhuids
"Ik schrok wakker in een brandend huisje", vertelt hij. Hij probeerde hij het vuur zelf te blussen maar dat lukte niet. Vervolgens werd de brandweer gewaarschuwd. Die kreeg het vuur wel onder controle.

"De mannen zijn er heelhuids vanaf gekomen", laat een ooggetuige weten. "Maar het chalet heeft veel schade opgelopen."

Volgens de zus van een van de jongens was het 'kantje boord'.

Alle Center Parcs parken in Europa Green Key gecertificeerd

Alle parken van Center Parcs in Europa zijn Green Key gecertificeerd. Dat geldt niet alleen voor de 24 vakantieparken in Nederland, België, Duitsland en Frankrijk, maar ook voor de drie door Center Parcs geëxploiteerde parken van Sunparks in België.

Met deze certificering toont Center Parcs aan dat zij er alles aan doet om het milieu te sparen zonder dat gasten inleveren op comfort en kwaliteit. Hierbij gaat zij een stap verder dan de wet- en regelgeving vereist. De uitreiking van het keurmerk is een belangrijke mijlpaal voor Center Parcs dat al sinds haar oprichting een sterke focus heeft op mens en milieu.

Eind 2019 waren alle parken in Frankrijk, Duitsland, acht Nederlandse parken en vijf in België Green Key gecertificeerd. Nu volgt ook de certificering van het Belgische park Center Parcs Les Ardennes en het Nederlandse Center Parcs Parc Sandur. Volgens Erwin Dezeure, CSR directeur Center Parcs Europe, toont de certificering aan dat Center Parcs vooruitstrevend is op het gebied van duurzaamheid en maatschappelijke betrokkenheid. "Ik ben er ontzettend trots op dat al onze parken in Europa Green Key gecertificeerd zijn. Het behalen van dit certificaat was onze doelstelling voor 2022, maar onze parken zijn er al twee jaar eerder in geslaagd dit te realiseren. Deze certificering is een prachtige erkenning voor de vele 'groene daden' in onze parken en een weerspiegeling van de duurzame ambities van Center Parcs."

Uitstekende score op duurzaamheid
Center Parcs voldeed als eerste bedrijf in de recreatiesector al aan de ISO 14001- en 50001-normen. Na de audits voldoen 27 gecertificeerde parken nu ook aan de strenge normen van Green Key op het gebied van duurzaamheid, milieu en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen. Hieronder vallen milieunormen als het registreren en besparen op het gebruik van gas, water en elektra en het verminderen van de hoeveelheid (rest)afval. Bovendien scoren de parken zeer goed op vele optionele criteria. Bij deze normen gaat het bijvoorbeeld om duurzame maatregelen als de toepassing van alternatieve bestrijdingsmiddelen, het aanbieden van biologische gerechten in restaurants en biologische producten in supermarkten en een minimaal gebruik van mono-verpakkingen. Ook vallen hieronder energie- en waterbesparende maatregelen die Center Parcs heeft getroffen in de Aqua Mundo, haar activiteiten om mensen met een achterstand op de arbeidsmarkt te ondersteunen en haar samenwerking met maatschappelijke organisaties.

Recipe: Ricotta and Chive Pancakes with Maple Bacon Butter

Whatever you choose, enjoy your pancakes this year.

They’re so light and airy you could call them cloud cakes. They rise up when you cook them from the whipped egg whites and delicate ricotta. The chives give them a savoury taste and the bacon butter….Oh, the butter!

Keep it in the fridge for a week or put slices in the freezer for a future treat.  It would be amazing lathered on a steak, as well a making the perfect topping for pancakes as all the flavour is right there, ready to melt into deliciousness. 

The Butter*

Ingredients 

125g cubed, very soft butter
6 rashers of thin pancetta (or 4 of streaky bacon)
1 Tbsp Maple Syrup
A pinch of sea salt

Method

1. Fry or grill your pancetta until brown and crispy and leave to cool.
2. Whip the butter in a food processor or with a food mixer until light and creamy.
3. Whip in the maple syrup and salt.
4. Crumble up the pancetta then mix into the butter, you can add a little bacon grease from the pan too for extra flavour.
5. Place the butter onto a sheet of baking parchment or cling film and then roll into a sausage.
6. Tightly wrap with cling film and refrigerate.

The Pancakes (makes 10)

Ingredients 

3 eggs (separated)
140ml milk
95g plain flour
1tsp baking powder
2 pinches of salt
225g ricotta
A small bunch of chopped chives
Sunflower oil for frying

Method

1. Whisk together: egg yolks, milk, baking powder, flour and salt.
2. Stir in the chives then VERY lightly stir in the ricotta. Leave some lumps.
3. Whisk the egg whites into stiff peaks and fold in lightly, leaving some streaks of white.
4. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and add 3 tablespoons of batter for 3 pancakes at a time.
5. Cook for a couple of minutes on each side, turning gently to preserve the airiness.
6. Serve with the maple butter (and extra pancetta and maple syrup!)
*Tip Make double quantities of this, yes a whole pack of butter, then slice it into chunks and freeze for later.

Eemhof vernieuwingen: LED bowlingbaan en Duo Racer

"CenterParcs De Eemhof; weer een deelproject gereed! De bowlingbanen zijn de afgelopen drie weken gerenoveerd en voorzien van LED BOWLING. Met ons uitvoeringsteam hebben we de banen eerst een avondje getest.....

Duoracer: Primeur met raceglijbaan

In een tijdsbestek van twee jaar moet de gehele renovatie van De Eemhof worden geklaard. Al veel eerder kunnen de zwemmers gebruik maken van de nieuwe glijbaan in de Aqua Mundo. De zogenoemde duoracer wordt opgeleverd in juni. De dubbele buisglijbaan is volgens Voorn een ‘primeur’ in Nederland. ,,Je kunt tegen elkaar racen. Elk in een eigen buis. Hierbij wordt je tijd geklokt.”

Deze claim lijkt echter niet helemaal terecht. Op Ardoer Camping Julianahoeve is er de Sharkracer: een duo-racer waarin je op het scoreboard kunt kijken wie het snelste is.

Center Parcs lapt 46 miljoen euro voor facelift van De Eemhof

Center Parcs investeert de komende twee jaar 46 miljoen euro in een metamorfose van park De Eemhof in Zeewolde. De 651 bungalows krijgen een facelift en het zwemparadijs een nieuwe glijbaan. Ook de Action Factory wordt gepimpt en er komt een wandelpromenade over het park met aanliggende speeltuinen in dierenthema.

De huidige aanblik van het park heeft geen moderne uitstraling en meer iets weg van vergane glorie. Mark Giethoorn, landelijk directeur Center Parcs, ontkent dat niet. ,,Het is al negen jaar geleden dat de laatste vernieuwingen zijn doorgevoerd. Dat is ook ongeveer de cyclus om dat proces weer aan te pakken.”

Andere parken die ook dit jaar nog onder handen worden genomen zijn Het Heijderbos (Heijen), Erperheide (België), De Kempervennen en Bispinger Heide (Duitsland).  De werkzaamheden voor Park Zandvoort zijn halverwege. Het meeste geld voor vernieuwingen stopt het moederbedrijf in De Eemhof.

How crafting benefits children

There’s no hiding from technology today. It’s everywhere and there’s a new generation growing up who won’t know life without it. In 2018, the UK’s communications regulator Ofcom found that 19% of three-to-four-year-olds owned a tablet and 52% went online for nearly nine hours a week. Many of the children surveyed, aged three to 15, were looking for “content and creativity” online and often used vlogger sites to find it.

Lindsey Newns has harnessed the power of digital technology to make a name for herself in the world of craft. Yet she’s still passionate about spending as much time as possible crafting in real life with her little ones. She’s the creative talent behind the inspirational Instagram account @lottieandalbert, and the commissioning editor of Mollie Makes magazine. Lindsey is mum to Rosie, aged five, Charlie, three, and baby George and, despite a busy schedule, she always finds time to craft with her children as she says the benefits for them – and her – are huge.

A shared learning experience

“I’m always amazed when we craft together,” reveals Lindsey. “The children give me so many ideas for projects. They think outside the box and approach things in a way that adults don’t necessarily do.” Craft is a great activity for groups of any size, Lindsey enthuses. At Center Parcs, instructors understand the importance of shared learning so while some sessions are designed for parents and children to attend together, at others you can drop off your child and let them craft under supervision, as well as make new friends.

Exploring and expressing creativity

Although Lindsey loves the convenience of craft kits, she reckons the best craft activity is to give children the freedom to express themselves. As we get older we put labels on ourselves, she says – whether we’re artistic or not. But as a child you’re uninhibited. “Let them explore materials and what they want to make,” she advises. “I like to mix it up, sometimes bringing out a bag of fabric scraps – which they can cut up and stick down – then the next time, a jar full of buttons.”

Educational and fun

As well as helping to improve basic mathematics through counting and measuring, craft can be educational in other ways. Lindsey often enjoys combining woodland walks with her crafting, which gives her little ones opportunities to learn about nature. “We take an egg box out on a walk and look for treasures or sometimes do a nature trail,” she reveals. “Then when we get home we stick them all onto paper with glue and it creates a kind of record of our day.” Center Parcs Nature Detectives sessions are designed to help little ones enjoy nature as well as learn about the wild world outdoors and its inhabitants.

Developing problem-solving skills

Using limited resources to create a sculpture or picture requires a lot of innovative thinking. It’s great to watch children in action, says Lindsey. “I found it amazing to see my three-year-old stick things down in the shape of a car. I wouldn’t have even thought he would be able to think of the shape of a car, let alone find the pieces and then replicate it. Craft feeds their imaginations and encourages them to think freely.”
