Woodland lunchbox treats for your little ones

It’s going to be a big change of pace for all children, heading back to school this year. Maybe a little something fun in their lunchbox will help to brighten their day and give them something to look forward to at lunchtimes. Your little ones can join in making these as a snack at the weekend too, just get a pack of googly eyes from the supermarket (or make your own with balls of icing or chocolate buttons) and food becomes more fun.

If you’re on village and want to try these out, all of the ingredients can be sourced at ParcMarket.

Ladybird Tomato Cheese & Biscuits

  • Baby plum tomatoes
  • Ritz biscuits/small crackers
  • Butter
  • Cheese slices
  • Black olives
  • Black icing from a squeezy tube
  • Icing eyes

Butter the crackers and top with a circle of sliced cheese, cut out with a small cookie cutter or egg cup. Slice a plum tomato nearly all the way through and open out to make wings.

Add half an olive for the head, edible eyes and icing dots.

Crunchy Bug Treats

  • Celery sticks/cucumber sticks
  • Smooth peanut butter/cream cheese
  • Kiwi/cucumber slices
  • Cashew nuts/cherry tomatoes or grapes
  • Blueberries
  • Pretzels
  • Icing eyes

For the snails use celery sticks or cucumber for the body and spread or pipe on a layer of peanut butter or cream cheese. Add cucumber, tomato or kiwi slices for the body and add a cashew nut or grape for a head. Use peanut butter to add googly eyes and add antennae made from cucumber strips, making a hole with a cocktail stick.

To make caterpillars you can add a row of blueberries or grapes for a body and for dragonflies use pretzels for wings.

Hedgehog Sandwich

  • Brown bread
  • Cheese slices
  • Red Leicester cheese slices
  • Raisins
  • Your favourite filling
  • Black olive or blueberry

Cut sandwiches into large circles with a cookie cutter and use the same cutter as a guide to cut a zig-zag edge in cheese slices for the spikes. Add a circle for his tummy, a heart for his face, raisin eyes and an olive nose, all stuck with a blob of soft cheese or peanut butter. Small cheese circles can be added for little hoggy feet.

Owl Sandwich

  • Brown bread
  • Cheese slices
  • Red Leicester cheese slices
  • Carrot
  • Cream cheese or ham for filling
  • Blueberries

After cutting any favourite sandwich into a large circle add a round cheese belly and eyes, some oval wings and triangular ears. Add a carrot triangle beak and blueberry eyes, all stuck with a blob of peanut butter or creamy cheese.
