....

Inside Bluebell Wood children’s hospice
Most of us are fortunate enough to have never set foot in a children’s hospice. When a small group of us at Center Parcs Head Office were invited to Bluebell Wood, our local children’s hospice supported by Together for Short Lives, it would be the first time for all of us.
But every question we were quietly, anxiously asking ourselves before the trip – what would it be like? What is the proper way to act? How sad would it be? – was unnecessary.
Bluebell Wood is a place for children with life-limiting illnesses.
Often, it is a place for children nearing the end of their life.
One thing it is definitely not, is a sad place.
The place
Bluebell Wood is in North Anston, Sheffield. The hospice is set in six-and-a-half acres of land; over 26,000 square metres of purpose-built grounds and buildings.
Inside, walls are covered with photos, children’s paintings and brightly coloured hand prints – the hospice’s motif. At the heart of the building is the lounge and dining area, filled with sofas and bean bags, rocking horses and play mats, board games and Lego bricks. A wall of full-height windows let the sunlight stream in. There are dining tables and a kitchen which serves up hot, home-cooked meals each day – it’s 11am when we arrive, there are homemade spring rolls in the oven and the whole place smells amazing.
The sounds
There are no hushed tones here, no whispered conversations or grave faces. Bluebell Wood’s motto is “Living with love and laughter” which pervades the entire place and everyone who works here. The hospice is dedicated to offering as many experiences as possible to children with life-shortening conditions, and as many memories as possible to their families. There’s a music room, a computer room, a messy play area, a sensory room and a cinema.
The home from home
Bluebell Wood families can stay on the premises for a night, a week, or longer. They have their own en-suite rooms – children’s bedrooms are equipped with hoists and piped oxygen, sofa beds for a parent to stay by their side. But there’s also a private terrace outside each room, and the team tell us they’ll often fill a room with a child’s favourite things before they arrive – Thomas the Tank Engine toys or wrestling posters.
At the far end of the hospice are the two end-of-life suites, Primrose and Forget-Me-Not. After a child passes, the family are welcome to stay in the suite – which includes a special cooled room for the child – until the funeral. The team offer specialist support throughout, including counselling, helping with funeral arrangements and creating special keepsakes.
The gardens
The last part of our tour is around the hospice gardens. There are play areas, a wheelchair-accessible trampoline, picnic benches, flower beds and a memorial garden.
It’s early spring when we visit, but the sun is shining and we’re shown tree saplings that are just starting to green after winter. One day, they’ll be a tiny forest of deciduous trees which will encourage a real bluebell wood to grow underfoot.
The gardens play a big part in the team’s events calendar. All year there are special occasions – some scheduled, some impromptu. They bring in a bouncy castle, do face-painting, throw barbecues or offer pony rides. Other times, they’ll bring forward school prom or Christmas – sourcing a Santa, shipping in artificial snow and dressing trees at a day’s notice – for a child that may not live to see it otherwise.
The mascot
On our way out, we meet George the springer spaniel. He’s named after Georgia, a little girl who passed away at the hospice in 2011. Georgia had always wanted a dog, and when her family were unable to keep him, he joined the Bluebell Wood team.
He’s fantastic with children, and is often found enjoying a ride up and down the corridors on a wheelchair, or scampering around the grounds in the sunshine.
As our group gets ready to leave, George picks up his blanket and trots over to present it, waiting for the obligatory ear scratches he has come to expect in return. He rolls on his back, kicking his paws in the air. He is the perfect mascot for Bluebell Wood; a dog is the best reminder that life – even one that is shorter than we would wish – can, and should, be filled with love and joy.

New arrivals at Sherwood Forest and it’s triplets!
“What a day! The duties of Sherwood Conservation Rangers Kev Gustard and Mike Hill certainly have moments which make you think ‘wow, these guys have the best job in the world’ and when the task involves tagging young tawny owls, you’re hard pressed to think any different.
Kev is one of the most passionate rangers you will ever meet and his knowledge and enthusiasm is truly infectious.
When I found out Kev was heading out to tag tawny owl chicks I asked if I could ‘tag’ along too and he was happy to include me in his day.
Tagging (also known as ringing) a bird involves placing a light alloy ring around one leg. Kev explained that the rings have a unique number on them which is registered with the British Trust of Ornithology (BTO), this can then be tracked and information collected.
In conjunction with the Birkland Ringing Group, Kev has been ringing birds at Sherwood Forest and surrounding areas for over 22 years. Although tawny owls don’t move more than a couple of miles from their original site, Kev said he’d previously tagged a bird that had recorded the longest movement of a tawny owl – from Sherwood Forest to Cleveland, about 100 miles away!
A trio of tawny owls
When we reached the owl box, Kev was already aware that the youngsters inside were around 3 weeks old as he keeps a regular eye on all 15 boxes on the village, four of which are occupied by nesting owls.
Kev popped on his goggles and climbed the ladder. When he reached the top Kev gave a little knock, just in case mum or dad were home. The likelihood of which would have been pretty slim as the parents generally sleep away from the box during the day.
Kev carefully put his hand in and gently, one after the other, cradled not one, not two but three chubby little tawny owl chicks into his bird bag. Once back on the ground, Kev and Mike completed their duties by placing the small ring around one leg of each chick – all of which was a very calm affair for the chicks indeed.
These chicks, although all looking healthy were three different sizes. Kev explained this was because an owl will lay each of its eggs two or three days apart. This ensures that if there’s not enough food for all the chicks, at least the strongest will survive.
“That’s nature’s cruel but effective survival tactics” Kev said.
Luckily, Sherwood Forest is full of tasty treats to keep all three chicks well fed and looking at these siblings, it was clear they had good parents working hard to maintain healthy appetites.
After a very brief outing, the chicks were returned to their box via Kev’s steady hand.
These chicks will spend the next couple of weeks in their box, growing and stretching their wings, before they begin finding their way onto the nearby branches. They’ll stay dependent on their parents for about another five months, then who knows where they’ll go? But with the special work done today, it’s hoped we’ll be able to track their movements and learn more about their behaviour.
If I were them, I’d certainly stay at Sherwood Forest!”
Discover more about the nature and wildlife at Sherwood Forest by booking your short break today.

Recipe: Colourful Buddha Bowls
Apparently, formal dining from a plate with a knife and fork is out. Bowls are in. Whether it’s because you’re eating at your desk, curled up on the sofa or taking the perfect photo of your dinner with one hand, it’s all about bowls.
A ‘Buddha bowl’ – so named because it should be rounded and plump with ingredients, like a Buddha belly – is basically a salad bowl, filled to the brim with tasty things to create a comforting but healthy meal.
When composing your Buddha Bowl, you want to include lots of different flavours, colours and textures. Crisp vegetables; something spicy and roasted; beans, meat or fish for protein; a rice or grain base; avocado or a rich dressing for delicious fats. It’s easy to keep your bowl vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free if you wish.
Here are a couple of combinations I think work particularly well. Use whatever quantities you need for just you, the whole family or even a week’s worth of made-ahead lunch bowls.
Roast Butternut Squash and Hummus Buddha Bowl
Ingredients
- Edamame/soy beans, boiled in water for 5 minutes
- Red cabbage, finely sliced
- Yellow pepper, finely sliced
- Sugar snap peas, blanched in boiling water for 1 minute
- Radish, finely sliced
- Avocado, peeled and sliced
- Butternut squash
- Salt and pepper, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp ground coriander
- Olive oil
- Feta cheese
- Hummus (Moroccan-style)
- Pistachio nuts, chopped
- Sachet of microwaveable rice
- Vinaigrette dressing
Spicy roast butternut squash method
1 Cut the squash into chunky slices and remove the skin with a potato peeler
2 Chop into dice-sized cubes
3 Toss in 2 tbsp olive oil
4 Mix in plenty of salt and pepper, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp cumin seeds and 1 tsp ground coriander
5 Spread on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment
6 Bake for 40 minutes at 180C, turning halfway through (I like to add a drizzle of maple syrup at this point to help them caramelise)
Assembly
Put your rice in the bottom of the bowl, then add your other ingredients around the sides. Once the main ingredients are assembled, dollop your hummus in the middle and top with the chopped pistachio nuts. Drizzle with your vinaigrette dressing.
Chicken and Chickpea Buddha Bowl with Almond Butter Dressing
Ingredients
- Chicken breast
- Tin of chickpeas
- Cherry tomatoes
- Carrots, thinly sliced
- Baby salad leaves
- Baby sweetcorn, sliced in half lengthways
- Boiled egg, sliced in half
- Guacamole
- Seeds for sprinkling (sunflower seeds and poppy seeds work well)
- Salt and pepper, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 1 tsp coriander, 1 tsp ground cumin, 1 tsp tumeric
- Sachet of microwaveable quinoa
For the dressing: - 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp garlic olive oil
- 1 tbsp white (balsamic) vinegar
Roasted chicken, chickpeas and dressing method
1 Combine your spices
2 Rub a chicken breast with a little olive oil and sprinkle both sides with some of your spice mix
3 Rinse the chickpeas in a sieve and dry by rubbing with a clean tea towel
4 Toss the chickpeas in a bowl with 2 tbsp olive oil and add the remaining spice mix
5 Roast the chickpeas and the chicken on a tray in the oven for 25-30 minutes until both are golden and cooked through, shaking the chickpeas occasionally to mix
6 Add all your dressing ingredients to a jar and shake well to combine
Assembly
Use your microwaved quinoa as your bowl’s base, then add your other main ingredients around the sides. Finish with the guacamole in the centre, topped with seeds and drizzle over your almond butter dressing.

Meet the family behind our perfect pint
It’s always been important to us to support local producers. Stocking one locally-sourced product allows us to start a chain reaction that includes other local growers, producers and manufacturers too.
Craft beer has rocketed from niche to mainstream in recent years, with ales from small, local breweries popping up everywhere from corner shops to chain pubs. Pop into ParcMarket at any of our villages and you’ll find local ales and beers sourced from within a few miles, and for Sherwood Forest it’s Nottinghamshire’s Springhead Brewery that provides the perfect pint…

Summer skin in five simple steps
Summer is just around the corner which means we’ve got to up our game on our summer skincare routine. As we dig out our shorts, head outdoors and enjoy the sun, here are our five simple steps to getting that perfect summer glow.
Scrub your way to smooth skin
For silky smooth skin, exfoliating is our go-to skincare step. It eliminates dead skin cells that we definitely don’t want and uncovers smoother, softer skin that we most definitely do! During the summer months, exfoliating is key as our skin is prone to drying out. At Aqua Sana the Elemis Intensely Cleansing Salt Scrub is a great way to ditch dead skin cells and perfectly prep the skin in time for summer.
Moisturise daily
Just like we get thirsty, so does our skin! Sun exposure can dry out our skin so moisturising daily during summer is a must. Moisturising after exfoliating can help lock in moisture and promote naturally softer skin. Go all out with the Elemis Nectar Nourishing Wrap at Aqua Sana – it offers super hydration for thirsty skin.
Protect your skin with SPF
Although a tan is something we all desire, the harmful effects the sun can have on our skin is one we all need to protect against – sun damage is one of the biggest causes of ageing. That’s why it’s super important to stay sun-savvy this summer and protect against those harmful UV rays with a suncream high in SPF.
Drink plenty of water
It’s important to stay hydrated all year round, but in the summer months the heat can leave our body feeling dehydrated. It’s important to drink around eight glasses of water a day. If you’re bored of water, why not opt for a summery twist? For healthy alternatives, you could add a slice of lemon for flavour or swap water for coconut water.
Chill out in the shade
Ditch spending hours in the sun this summer and chill out in the shade by getting your summer glow a safer way, straight from the bottle. Long gone are the nightmares of streaky legs and orange faces, get yourself the perfect faux tan thanks to these top tips from Group Aqua Sana Manager, Kay Pennington.
Pamper yourself this summer with a Spa Day or Spa Break at one of our five glorious Aqua Sana Spas, take a look at our locations and book yours today.

VIDEO: Peanut the hedgehog makes a new home at Woburn Forest
Have you met Peanut the hedgehog yet? She arrived at Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital last year, too small to survive the winter alone. Along with dozens of other hedgehogs, she was hand reared by a dedicated team of volunteers throughout the cold months.
Now she and a few friends have been released at Woburn Forest, which has been designated an official hedgehog release site.
The video on the left tells the story of how we prepared their new home, and shows them discovering their enclosure for the first time.
After a couple of weeks getting used to the outdoors in a comfortable enclosure, Ranger Lucie opened the door and they got the chance to make their move into the big wide forest.
The second video on the left captures the moment one of the hedgehogs made their night time exit.
Now that the weather’s warming up, more of us are out in our gardens getting them ready for summer. But this can be disastrous for hedgehogs, for often fall victim to strimmers and lawn mowers. Our top tips video will show you how to look after any hedgehogs you may come across in your garden or elsewhere.
If you want to support Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital and the amazing work they do, looking after our prickly little friends, they have an Amazon wishlist with options from just £5.
