Wildlife at Center Parcs

Red squirrels

Known for their rust coloured coats, red squirrels spend a lot of their time in the canopies of trees. Red squirrels are extremely rare, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to spot one at Whinfell Forest or Longford Forest.

Geese

Along with swans, geese are the largest waterfowl, even though they tend to spend most of their time on land.

Muntjac deer

Chinese muntjac deer are originally native to China, but were introduced to Britain in the 1900s. Muntjac deer can live for approximately sixteen – nineteen years!

Goldfinch

Goldfinches are native to Europe, North Africa and also Asia. With distinctive colouring, many guests have spotted Goldfinches on their Center Parcs breaks.

We would love to see your wildlife images taken at Center Parcs, remember to use the hashtag #mycp!

Slow cooked sausages and borlotti beans

If you’re a fan of planning ahead, it’s difficult to deny the benefits of a slow cooker. It uses such a small amount of power and you can leave it to do its thing, bubbling away, while you get on with life. For this recipe, all you need is a few minutes’ effort early in the day then you can head outside to kick leaves while your dinner gets delicious all by itself.

And don’t worry, you don’t really need fresh borlotti beans, as tinned borlotti beans will work just as well. In fact, all beans are great with sausages – haricot and cannellini would be fine – they soak up all the flavours and make for a tasty, hearty meal.

Perfect, no-fuss autumn food.

Pssst: Not part of the slow cooker revolution? Don’t worry, there’s a stove-top method too.

Ingredients

8-10 sausages
A handful of chopped chorizo (about 4″)
1 large onion
2 sticks of celery
2 peppers
3 carrots
1 large clove of garlic – sliced
1 tin of rinsed cannellini/borlotti beans or a small bowl of fresh borlotti*
1 tin plum tomatoes
Pinch of chilli flakes or smoked paprika
Stock cube or stock ‘melt’
A few shakes of Worcestershire sauce

*If you have fresh borlotti beans boil them in unsalted water for 20 minutes until softened

Slow cooker method

1. Switch your slow cooker on to high to preheat a little
2. Chop the onion, celery, pepper and carrots into small chunks
3. In a large pan, gently fry the chorizo for a few minutes
4. Add all the vegetables and stir well, then add the sliced garlic clove
5. Cook them down for 10 minutes and put them into the slow cooker
6. Brown the sausages in a frying pan to give them colour – add them to the slow cooker too
7. Add the tinned tomatoes, beans, chilli/paprika and the stock cube/melt
8. Slow cook on high for 5-6 hours
9. Check the flavour then add any extra seasonings if needed
10. Leave it to cool a little before serving

Stove-top method

1. Brown the sausages and put to one side
2. Fry off the chorizo, then add the vegetables and soften them
3. Add the browned sausages, the tomatoes, paprika, and stock
4. Add half a can of water to make a loose sauce
5. Simmer in a lidded pan, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour.

We eat it this with plenty of crusty, thickly buttered bread. Just look at that steam…

Luxurious accommodation reaches new heights at Whinfell Forest, Cumbria

Center Parcs has opened four luxury Treehouses at its Whinfell Forest village in Cumbria. The new accommodation offering is available to book now and opened to guests on 24 August 2020. Whinfell Forest is the fifth Center Parcs village to have Treehouses available to guests and the four new builds include one which is specially adapted for those with limited mobility. The adapted Treehouse is built on four extra columns, providing increased space and wheelchair accessible features throughout.

Each Treehouse offers breath-taking views of their forest surroundings, sitting as high as eleven metres amongst the treetops. With Cumbria having recently been voted the third best holiday destination in the UK, Whinfell Forest’s Treehouses offer the perfect opportunity for a relaxing staycation in the forest. They are uniquely placed to look towards the Lake District’s Eastern Fells, a UNESCO world heritage site.

Center Parcs’ most luxurious accommodation, Treehouses feature four en-suite bedrooms with private balconies, an outdoor hot tub, gas barbeque, sauna, games den, and a large open plan living space and kitchen. Their interiors have been thoughtfully designed with guest comfort, experience, and sustainability in mind. The decking has been made with recycled plastic and the wood sustainably sourced. The build, which began before the village was forced to close in March, represents a £4 million investment into Whinfell Forest.

How to make the most of a rainy day at Center Parcs

We’ve all been there, the countdown to our Center Parcs break is on and we find ourselves desperately refreshing our weather forecast app in the hopes that the rain symbols changes to the sun. But don’t worry the unpredictable British weather doesn’t have to ruin your day, here are some fun things you can get up to with your family in the forest.

Get crafty

Keeping your little ones entertained can be a task on a normal day, but especially when the weather is grey, so keep them busy for an hour or two with a relaxing craft activity.

For your little ones eight years or older, try out the ancient art of willow weaving, as they learn from the experts how to delicately bend willow fronds into their own beautiful creation.

For your smaller ones, head to our Activity Den to get messy together with Mucky Pups. Where you can join your children in getting creative with paints, colours and stickers to create the ultimate masterpiece, that can be proudly placed on your fridge at home.

If you fancy some cosy time in your accommodation, why not try some autumn woodland crafts? Simply print out in advance our leaf template, get colouring with your little ones and cut the leaves out to make your own autumn wreath. Check out our blog post for more inspiration.

Indoor adventures

If you have got a couple of hours to spare during the day, why not have an adventure with one of our indoor activities? With something for every age, you can keep everyone happy from the grown-ups to your little ones and even try something new. Read our post on 10 activities for a rainy day to see what takes you fancy.

Cook up some comfort food

When it’s miserable outside, there is nothing better than cosying up on the sofa by the fire and eating some warming food. For the ultimate comfort food why not try our one-pot pasta of dreams which is guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser with your family. With very few ingredients, taking only 12 minutes to cook you will be back on the sofa in no time.

If you don’t feel like cooking because you are on holiday, after all, order from our new food delivery service for restaurant-quality without having to leave your cosy accommodation. With options ranging from Indian, Italian to a British classic, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

Make a splash

When you are in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, the weather outside doesn’t matter. Heated to a balmy 29.5C all year round you can still feel like you are in a tropical location without leaving the country. Pre-book your space to be able to relax in our whirlpools, tackle the Wild Water Rapids and most importantly escape the rain for an hour or two.

Get prepared with our packing guide with a list of helpful essentials, especially for the colder months or book your break at Center Parcs today.

Autumn woodland crafts

If you’re spending autumn at Center Parcs, why don’t you try a family activity such as Family Nature Journal, Willow Workshop, or Build a Nature House to encourage wildlife in your garden?

Walking in the forest or park is such a lovely thing to do during the autumn months when there’s still some warmth in the sun and crunchy leaves underfoot. Collecting pine cones and acorns is a good way to keep little ramblers distracted with a little bit of healthy competition to see who can find the best, biggest or most woodland treasures.

If you are feeling creative when you get home you can get crafty by adding a bit of paint to your haul to decorate the house for Autumn. You can use emulsion tester pots (that way the colours might even match your home décor!) or just use kids acrylic paint. No need to be neat, they all look good mixed up together, lined up in a row or tumbled into a big jar.

Even if the weather doesn’t lend itself to a countryside walk we’ve made you a printable leaf template. Just print off onto coloured card, or plain paper and get colouring. Cut the leaves out and make your own spectacular Autumn wreath, or let everyone make their own mini wreath by sticking their leaves to a paper plate.

Ombré Pine Cones

Gather some fresh pine cones and some acrylic paint or leftover emulsion tester pots. Stick the bottom of a pine cone to a tray with some plasticine or Blu-tak to keep it steady then dot paint onto the end of each pine cone scale, starting from the bottom. One-third of the way up, add a bit of white to your paint colour, then two-thirds of the way up add more white to get an ombré effect.

When they are dry decorate your mantelpiece with them, hang them up with cotton or put them in a big jar.

Painted Acorns

When the acorns are still fresh and green they stay obediently in their little acorn cups for painting. Once they are a bit older they sometimes fall out and you may need to glue them back in.

Get some with the stalks still attached as a useful handle and paint with acrylic paint or colour with metallic markers. You can make a mini washing line with string and peg them up to dry. They look great in a Mason jar with a glass candle holder, but make sure they are well away from the flame.

Autumn Wreath

Use our printable template here and print onto paper or coloured card. It’s easy to soak up an hour or so colouring them in with crayons or felt tips, even adults like a bit of colouring in. If you have glittery card you can trace some onto the back of that too, they look great added into the mix for a bit of sparkle.

Cut your coloured leaves out (little ones might need help with this) and either stick them to a paper plate with the centre cut out or onto a wreath base or just a large circle of card. Hang your wreath up for some crafty Autumn colour in your home.

Book your next Center Parcs break today.

World Cleanup Day past goed bij Center Parcs.

Eating out at Center Parcs FAQ’s

The global pandemic has been on the tips of everyone’s tongue over the last couple of months, creating disruption and change in our day to day lives. We have had to adapt a lot to the ever-changing government guidelines affecting our daily activities and eating out has been no exception.

To help make your Center Parcs break as worry-free as possible we have come up with a few frequently asked questions to help you plan for your break and answer your burning questions.

Q: Do you need to book restaurants at Center Parcs?

Yes, all restaurants must be pre-booked in advance. Don’t forget or you’ll have some annoyed little ones and even grown-ups on your hands that have been craving their favourite sweet or savoury dish at The Pancake House.

You can pre-book your restaurant reservations four weeks before you arrive, and takeaway orders can be placed up to four days in advance.

Q: How do I pre-book restaurants at Center Parcs?

Get your date nights or family meals pencilled into the diary by logging into your Center Parcs account via our website and making a restaurant reservation before or during your stay.

Q: How do I use the order and pay system for food and drink?

For all questions on our new restaurant order and pay system which also include takeaway deliveries to your accommodation, see here for all the answers.

Q: How is Center Parcs keeping everyone safe in the restaurants?

We have been working hard to prepare for our restaurants to be safe for your family. Here are a few highlights on what you’ll see when you dine in:

  • Single-use menus
  • All tables will be spaced out for social distancing
  • Our restaurants are now cashless (so don’t forget your payment cards!)
  • If you are visiting us at Longford Forest face coverings must be worn in restaurants until you are seated at your table

Q: How do I order a takeaway?

We all know how our little one’s eyes, big or young light up when you mention the ‘T’ word. So, ordering a takeaway especially after a long day of activities needs to be a quick and easy process and at Center Parcs, it is just that. Simply visit the ‘food and drink’ page on our website, pick your restaurant of choice, log in to your order and pay account or set one up and follow the instructions.

Q: What restaurants are in Center Parcs?

In the forest, you’ll find a wide variety of food and drink options to suit every occasion and mood. So you can stop off for a quick bite while you are out and about or find somewhere all the fussy eaters in the family can have a big hearty meal to fill you up after a day of activities. For more details on what restaurants are available in the village you are visiting please have a look at our food and drink page.

Q: Will the soft play areas in some of the restaurants be open?

Unfortunately, our indoor soft play areas in some of our restaurants will be closed during your visit. But keep your little ones entertained with our single-use activity packs where they can colour and draw while waiting for their food.

To experience a getaway in the forest and our unique restaurants, book your Center Parcs restaurant today.

Packing for your October half term break

It won’t be sunhats and sun cream this October half term break, but it will be wellies, warm clothes and cosy woolly hats. With plenty of adventure and activities to get up to at Center Parcs, be prepared for a fun-filled break no matter what the weather. Here are our top five essentials for a Center Parcs break this half term.

A warm coat for long walks in the forest

Autumn is here and slowly but surely we’ll be finding ourselves heading to the wardrobe to put on more and more layers as winter gradually approaches. This October half term, ensure a waterproof coat is on the top of your Center Parcs checklist. All of our villages are set in acres of beautiful, leafy woodland, so step outside, enjoy the fresh air and marvel as autumn takes over the forest.

Wellies for splashing in puddles

If the rain decides to join you on your break then a pair of wellies are a must this half term. From splashing in puddles to muddy walks on the forest trails, wellies for little ones and big ones are an essential item to pack. Center Parcs is the perfect setting for an outdoor adventure so put on your wellies, wrap up warm and head to the forest to explore.

Swimming essentials for fun in the Subtropical Swimming Paradise

Our Subtropical Swimming Paradise is heated to 29.5 degrees, so whatever the weather is up to outside, you can enjoy a slice of summer inside during your pre-booked sessions. Each Subtropical Swimming Paradise at all our villages is home to child-friendly pools for little ones and jaw-dropping slides for big ones. So whether you’re coming for a morning dip or a moonlight swim, the whole family can join in the fun. Forgot something? Swimming essentials from towels, goggles, floats and swim costumes can be found at Aquatique.

Board games and playing cards for fun in your lodge

After a long day of activities, nothing can beat relaxing in your lodge, as you sit by the fire surrounded by family. For an evening of entertainment (where pyjamas is an acceptable dress code), board games and playing cards are perfect for creating family memories. So prepare to gather around the table or kick back on the sofa, order a takeaway from one of our restaurants and get competitive with a traditional game of cards. Don’t worry about digging out and dusting off your old deck of cards, at Just Kids you can choose from a range of fun-filled games and at The Store Room browse an excellent range of retro games.

A camera for capturing special moments

A Center Parcs break is perfect for capturing family moments all year round. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, Center Parcs in autumn is bursting with colour, creating the perfect backdrop for your family photos.

Take it from us, Center Parcs is a haven for wildlife, so if your camera’s to hand you will get some extraordinary photos.

We always love seeing photos from your breaks, don’t forget to hashtag #mycp on social media!

How to stay fit with your family

As your children grow and become more independent, tempting them away from their screens to stay active becomes the challenge. A break at Center Parcs is the perfect time to find new ways to get active together, with activities that accommodate children and grown-ups of any age, so why not give one of these a go during your next break.

Go along for the ride

It’s hard to make time for leisurely family bike rides normally, so make the most of your break at Center Parcs by hiring bikes for everyone and enjoying trips around the vehicle-light, tree-lined roads. With everything from balance bikes for three years and up to adult bikes with trailers or child seats, you can ensure the whole family enjoys the experience. Just pre-book your cycles online and head to the Cycle Centre on the first day of your break to get measured up.

Make play time active

Any parent of a small child will tell you that sitting still is not among their strengths. Make the most of this unbounded energy to get your heart-rate up with some simple play. Everything from playing tag among the trees to touring the village’s many outdoor play areas which will keep you and your little ones going for hours. You can even indulge in a little nostalgia with Den Building and Decorating – yes, moving twigs and pine cones can count as exercise!

Stretch yourselves

Activity doesn’t have to be intense – why not make the most of the peaceful woodland setting to enjoy some family yoga outside your lodge? Little ones love stretching themselves (though you might be envious of their amazing flexibility) and those of your family members who are 14 years+ can try a Yoga class first for a bit of inspiration.

Hit it!

Nurture your mini-Serenas with some court sports. Perfect for grown-ups who aren’t quite up to speed with their overarm serves and drop shots. Try Short Tennis, with short-handled rackets and soft balls; or for younger children, Family Ball Wall is a brilliant soft ball game that everyone can play, throwing or kicking soft balls at bright, interactive targets on the wall.

Aim and swing

For golf enthusiasts in the family, head to our themed Adventure Golf for a spot of tee with your family. Play to win in a tournament or just practice your aim and precision as you navigate the obstacles, avoid pitfalls and see who can get a hole in one first.

If any of these activities spark your interest, browse our website to see what else you can do to keep active with your little ones, or book your short break in the forest today.
